Coffee maker or percolator

Coffee maker or percolator

This is another method coffee snobs look down their nose at, but honestly, this is the most common way people make coffee. If you travel, wherever you go either has one of these conventional coffee maker machines or a Keurig, and honestly the classic Mr Coffee outperforms a Keurig every time for a good brew when you can't make a pour-over or a French Press.

Step 1: The grind

Grind your coffee to medium. The middle setting on every grinder I know of. Your ratio should be basically the same as with other non-espresso brew methods. I do a 16:1 ration (16oz water to 1oz of ground beans) and if I'll be brewing coffee for two people, I usually make about 24oz, so I'd grind about 1.5oz of coffee, roughly 3 heaping tablespoons. Grind it and load it into a paper filter in the brew basket.

Step 2: The water

If I'm making coffee for 2, I'll boil about 24oz of water and pour that into the water tank and turn the machine on.

Step 3: Done

It's really that simple. If it's an old machine, it may need a thorough cleaning to deliver a pristine cup, but generally good coffee will shine when brewed this way.

This is essentially the same for a traditional percolator, the only difference is if the holes in the filter basket are too big for medium grind and coffee grounds fall into the coffee, you may want to go a bit coarser with the grind.
